To start hydrangea seeds, you can use almost any type of container that is at least 2-3” deep and has drainage holes. It is important to choose a well-draining soil mix that is rich in organic matter, and hydrangeas prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Make sure the soil is loose and fertile to support healthy root development.

Once you have gone through the stratification period, you can sow the seeds on top of pre-moistened soil. Press them lightly into the soil without completely covering them, and space the seeds according to the recommended distance. Hydrangea seeds need light for germination, so avoid burying them. Put the trays or pots in a location with bright, indirect light and keep the temperature consistent at around 70-75°F (21-24°C) for the best germination results.

Make sure to keep the soil consistently moist, but do not overwater as it can cause the seeds to rot. To water gently and prevent dislodging the seeds, use a spray bottle or misting technique.
